Halloween and Mr. Hattori

When Halloween comes every year, I still remember one sad accident happened about 15 years ago. Mr. Hattori, 16, exchange student from Japan, new to America was shot by the guy who thought Mr. Hattori trespassed his property. He did not understand English well and did not stop when he was asked "freeze".

This was a very bid news in Japan and I just started to work at ECC English school. Mr. Hattori was one of the student sent from ECC exchange program. In Japan it is very rare for people own guns and we cannot really have guns. But quite a few Americans own guns and that cause many serious problems in the society.

When I was in Pullman as a student in 80s, I really think America was a great country. But now with too many illegal immigrants, unethical business practice, people do not care about other people, I feel America is not so attractive to the world.

Maybe if the country becomes so rich and people are satisfied, all the left is downhill. Japan is also the same situation. If we don't change now, US and Japan won't be attractive in the future.

Japanese Women Christian Lunch

I went to the women's lunch for Japanese Christians at Overlake Church in Redmond.
Maybe you know but Japanese people are not religious at all. In Japan when you are
born, your parents take you to Shrine for birth cerebration. When you get married,
a lot of people choose to have a Christian ceremony with White wedding dress. And
when you die, Buddhist priest come and your child or relative make a grave in the
in the Buddhist temple.

In the past, only 1% of Japanese population are Christian, and recent research shows
4% of adult say they are Christian. Compared to America, there is a very big gap.
In Korea, almost 30% are Christian.

This is one of the difficult matters when Westerner understand Japan. America is
based on Christianity, so that even though people do not go to church, you are
influenced by Christian value.

Pastor Nakagawa was the guest speaker on that day and he was fun and his
message was so meaningful. In today's world, people become more and more
selfish, influenced by more is good commercialism, but I think if you think again
what is important, you will have more meaningful life. I think especially today's
Japanese people need this.

Foliage and Onsen (Hot Spring)

It is very much Autumn in Seattle.
This morning, the weather got better and I could see the blue sky.
It's been a while I see the blue clear sky here.

The leaves change to red and yellow and some stay green, so it is
very colorful.

This season, I miss Onsen (hot spring). In Japan, Onsen is very popular
in the fall and many gourmet food on the table. Matsutake (king mushroom)
is the one of them and one domestic mushroom cost more than $100 sometimes.

King crab and oyster are the my favorite this season. I remember when I stayed
in Onsen resort, they always served so many tasty food.

Japanese people like to soak in the hot bath and Japanese bath can re-heat
the hot water, so the water won't get cold, so little bit like hot jet tub, but
it is different. We clean our body first and soak into the tub, so many people
can join naked. I like Japanese bath. American bath is too shallow.

How do single people find love?

I was at the dinner table with my husband tonight and he told me that he was trying to introduce his co-worker to the waitress at our favorite Japanese restaurant.
I am really wondering how single people find love recently. I asked my husband.
He asked a couple of 20s and 30s singles how they meet and they usually meet
through their friends. But usually they don't know the people you like.

And many people work so long hours and just do not have time to meet, so
tendency is more people stay single after 30. Even though there are so many
online dating sites, people still cannot meet what they want.

Even I feel that sometimes I visit some dating site, but there are not many
good candidates online. So where are quality singles? Especially men.
I still cannot really get magic formula how to find marriage minded quality men.

Power Out

It was really windy yesterday. Almost scary I thought the big tree
behind our house fell down and broke our house, but it was OK.

The leaves were flying and floating in the air and it was beautiful.

But when I came home, the grage door did not work and I found out
that power was out. I looked for a candles, but I could not find many
mini candles (I maybe donated to Goodwill), so we went out to eat
and got candles at IKEA.

Fortunately the power was back when we returned. But last time
it lasted 3 days, this time only 5 hours.

Undokai (Sports Day)

Yesterday was my son's sports day, called "Undo-kai" in Japanese.
I remember when I was a kid, we practice 50m, dance, relay, etc.
I was not particularly good at sports, but it was always fun.
Unfortunately it was raining yesterday, so we did it inside.

In America, I don't think they do this kind of school event.
They play sports, but not everybody in the class compete against
another class team.

This is another cultural difference between US and Japan.
